If you’re an Office 365 Enterprise customer, there is news from Microsoft. OneDrive for Business storage will be increased from 1 TB to 5 TB allocated storage per user. This is some good news in the wake of Microsoft announcing it was not going to honor its claim of unlimited storage for OneDrive (personal not business). Continue reading

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Is BYOD Bad for Your Company?
Until recently when we thought of computing devices, we usually thought of PCs and laptops. Today, with tablets and smart phones selling in the millions on opening weekend, we have a very different picture of what a computing device is.
If you’re not familiar with it, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is the idea of using a consumer computing device (such as an iPad or Surface RT tablet) to get work done, either in the office, at home, or on the road. Most of these devices were not designed to “get work done”, but instead to consume content (ex: checking email, reading news websites/apps, etc.). These devices are not managed, and may not have even the most basic security features enabled. This can spell disaster for any corporate network. Continue reading

The difference between POP3 and Exchange
I have been asked many times by customers “What type of email account do I have”, and why would I want to upgrade from a POP account to Microsoft Exchange? Let me explain some of the differences of each technology and the benefits of each. Continue reading

Adding SkyDrive to your Document Libraries in Windows
Microsoft Live Essential Suite 2011 included tools such as Live Messenger, Live Writer, Mail, and Live Mesh. Microsoft Live Mesh allowed users to synchronize data between different PCs on your network, and even keep up to 5 GB out on the cloud for free. The big downside to Live Mesh was that you could never increase your 5 GB limit. Continue reading

Introducing Hyper-V Quick Migration
In the Hyper-V world, lots of us talk about Live Migration. That is where a virtual machine (VM) is moved from one host to another with no perceived downtime. The caveat is that both hosts need be configured to use the same shared storage (such as a SAN or external drive array). Continue reading

Cloud Computing: Why Go to the Cloud?
What is Cloud Computing?

When is a computer too old? The Cloud may be changing how we think about this.
When is a computer too old? This question is getting harder and harder to answer. Traditional PC lifecycle thinking says that a PC is efficient to use up to 4 years old, and no longer cost effective to use beyond 5 years old. This is because the cost of maintaining the system is greater than the value of this old PC or laptop. Continue reading

Video: Microsoft’s Updated SkyDrive will be Integrated into Windows 8

With this update SkyDrive will essentially be part of the Windows 8 metro style interface. There will also be integration to allow access to your SkyDrive from the Windows Explorer window in Windows 8. This will make it as easy to access your SkyDrive as is your My Documents folder. Will Cloud Computing Be Getting More Affordable?
If you haven’t read it yet, check out Microsoft’s recent white paper on the economics of cloud computing. How do you reduce your IT infrastructure costs by 80%? Well Microsoft thinks that one day cloud could be that cost effective! Microsoft released a new white paper in November called The Economics of the Cloud which describes in detail how the cloud could become so inexpensive (compared to traditional infrastructure) that may not consider anything else. Microsoft looks at a vast array of factors from cost saving per server as larger datacenters get larger, to making physical host servers more efficient by analyzing the time of day each client virtual machine is most highly utilized. Microsoft’s Replacement for BPOS: Microsoft Office 365
What Is Office365?
Office365 is an integrated cloud solution for hosted Exchange email, hosted SharePoint, and hosted Lync. It is not, however, the next version of Microsoft Office. This service is an upgrade to Microsoft’s existing BPOS (Business Productivity Online Suite) cloud offering. In addition, this service offers several new packages which should be attractive to both very small businesses and large enterprises alike.
